Players take turns being coders and guessers. The coder selects five pegs in any combination from the eight available colors. Secretly from the opponent, he places them in special holes, setting a hidden code. The guesser has twelve attempts to decipher the code. In each attempt, he places the pegs on the board in the combination that he thinks is closest to the original. If he fails, he loses.

Coder uses additional white and black pegs to inform the guesser about the correctness of the proposed combinations. Thus, the guesser has a greater amount of information from trial to trial, allowing him to solve the riddle. After guessing the layout, the players switch roles.
