"boule" is a traditional French party game with elements of skill, popular mainly in southern France (Provence), but also practiced in other regions of France and in other countries, especially the Mediterranean. The game originated in 1910 and is derived from another similar game called jeu provençal ("Provençal game"). The first boules were made of wood and nailed all over. In 1930, the use of steel boules was finally adopted. The first international competition took place in 1959, and 53 countries participated in the 2004 World Cup in Grenoble.
The game takes place on a grass-free field, for example on hardened sand, of sufficient dimensions and consists of throwing steel balls ("bouami"; French "boule" - a ball) towards a small wooden ball called "cochonet" in French, which means "pig" (in Poland the name is "pig").
