π Manufacturer / Distributor description for GO & GO Bang - Game Set (HG)
The board is empty at the beginning of the game, and players fill it by taking turns placing one of their stones at the intersection of the lines on the board. Once placed on the board, a stone cannot be moved. Instead of making a move, the player may pass and not place any tile on the board.
Tiles that are adjacent vertically or horizontally (but not diagonally) form chains. The size of the chains in the game is not limited by anything. If a player surrounds an opponent's stone or chain by moving (deprives them of breath), they take captive (remove from the board) surrounded stones.
Breaths and surround
Breaths are free intersections next to a single stone or chain. All intersections that are horizontally or vertically next to a stone or chain are considered breaths (diagonal intersections are not considered breaths). Thus, a lone stone placed in the center of the board has four breaths; a lone stone placed on the edge of the board (but not in a corner) always has three breaths, while a lone stone placed in a corner has only two breaths.
If, as a result of movement, a single stone or chain is completely stripped of breaths, i.e. there are no longer any free intersections next to them vertically and horizontally, and within the chain of stones no has no spaces, its stones are taken prisoner.
Suicide Rule
Sometimes in the course of the game it happens that one or more empty intersections remain inside the chain, surrounded on each side. These intersections are safe and no stones can be placed on them for the rest of the game.
If an empty intersection is inside a chain that is surrounded, and said free intersection blocks the chain from being surrounded, players cannot place their stones on such intersections under the rule of suicide. They are safe for the rest of the game.
The exception to this rule is when a player places his stone on such an intersection and gains an opponent's stone or stones as a result of this move. In all other cases, the suicide rule must be followed.
Ko
"Ko" is a special situation where one player can capture an opponent's stone, after which the opponent could capture the player's stone, which would lead to a situation identical to the starting position. In such a case, when a stone has been captured in a ko, it is forbidden to immediately capture the capturing stone. Instead, the player must place his stone elsewhere or must pass.
Game over
The game ends when both players decide that further moves will not change the outcome of the game in any way. Formally, this situation is considered to be the moment when both players pass consecutively. At this point, players use their stones to fill in no-man's points - i.e. intersections on the board that do not belong to any of the players and remove stones from the board that cannot be saved (if the game continued, they would be captured anyway) and add them to the stones taken prisoner.
Then each player counts the number of intersections, which he has surrounded with his chains and adds to them the number of opponent's stones he has captured during the game. The person with the higher final score is the winner.
Note: the instructions also contain rules for the game Go bang (Pente). The object of the game is to line up five pieces in your own color or capture five of your opponent's pieces.
