The origin of the game is not fully explained. Boards with twelve light and dark squares were found in the tombs of Egyptian kings and in Etruscan wall paintings. Mentions of a similar game also come from ancient Greece and Rome. Presumably, checkers, despite having an identical board, are not derived from the game of chess. The current form of the game has been known since around 1100 and probably originated in the south of France or Spain.
